In the world of sports fashion, few garments manage to capture the essence of a culture like this shirt inspired by the traditional Costa Rican oxcart. Inspiration and Concept
For me, the traditional oxcart of Costa Rica, recognised for its vivid colours and unique details, is more than just a means of transport: it is a symbol of hard work, tradition, and creativity. When I set out to create this shirt, I wanted to mirror the oxcart's wheel in the central design, and surround it by patterns that evoke the rich history of Costa Rican craftsmanship. But it doesn’t stop there. As a tennis player myself, I wanted to blend elements of the sport that I love (racquets, balls, nets, and courts) with national symbols, allowing every wear to tell a visual story that connects tennis to culture.
Design Elements: A Unique Visual Language
Every detail of the shirt has a special meaning. From national symbols like the Guanacaste tree, the yigüirro (clay-coloured thrush), and the guaria morada (purple orchid), to the torch of independence, and the country’s vibrant coffee culture. Even iconic species such as the manatee and white-tailed deer have been carefully woven into the design, creating a visual mosaic that celebrates Costa Rica’s biodiversity and heritage.
The back of the t-shirt features the Costa Rican flag, adding a patriotic touch that’s impossible to overlook. And as a special detail, I’ve included a line from the national anthem: “eternal prestige, esteem, and honour.” It’s a reminder of the strength and resilience of the Costa Rican people and of the pride I feel in being able to represent this on and off the court.
